Established with the inception of the college, the Department of Economics is known for creating interest in the students for the subject through its efficient teaching. The department has been conducting classes in Economics at the General Level for undergraduate students since the establishment of the college. Economics as a special subject was introduced at the BA level in the academic year 2007-2008. The department has started a two-year Masters programme in Economics from 2014-15. The department boasts of qualified staff members. It strives to enable students to enjoy learning the theoretical aspects of economics by blending it with practice and innovative teaching strategies. In order to give students further exposure, the department organizes industrial and institutional visits. The department instituted a new activity called ARTHOTSAV on the occasion of the Silver Jubilee Year of the college. Arthotsav is a three-day activity on a specific theme. The event includes class-wise group discussions, interfaculty quiz contests - Quizonomics, paper presentations, charts or poster presentation competitions and Stock Market Contests. The department conducts Certificate Courses in Banking and Finance, Insurance, Quantitative Techniques for Economics etc. The department has a strong research profile. Faculty members have successfully completed 06 research projects, 02 Minor Research Projects sponsored by UGC, New Delhi, 02 projects sponsored by BCUD, Savitribai Phule Pune University, 01 project by M.C.E. Society, Pune and 01 Major Research Project. The staff also updates itself through regular participation in seminars, workshops and conferences. The department also encourages students to attend National and International conferences and to present papers, provides guidance for research projects and supports participation in intercollege and university level competitions.
