Achievements / Highlights:

A Two Days International Seminar on “New Horizons in Cancer Research (NHCR-2015)” was jointly organized by MCE Society’s Interdisciplinary Science and Research Academy (ISTRA), Azam Campus, Pune and MCE Society’s Abeda Inamdar Senior College, Pune on 7th and 8th January, 2015 at PAI Hi Tech Hall, Azam Campus, Pune. During the seminar six lectures were delivered by eminent scientists invited from three different American Universities which included  Dr. Sufi Thomas, Dr. Tommo Iwakuma, Dr. Shrikant Anant and Dr. Animesh Dhar from University of Kansas, Prof. Michael Henry from University of Iowa and Dr. Nanjoo Suh from  Rutgers University. The invited cancer researchers shared their views and new findings with the audience in the field of cancer therapy and inspired all participants and students about the future scope of the subject.
The first lecture of the seminar included up-dates on the problem of Fibrosis following radiation therapy by Dr. Sufi Thomas followed by two more lectures one by Prof. Michael Hennry on the mechanism underlying drug resistance in prostate cancer and Targeting breast cancer stem cells for inhibition of cancer progression Dr. Nanju Suh. The lectures were followed by excellent informative interactions with the audience after each lecture.

  • Published a research paper on “Novel 3-Acetylcoumarin Schiff’s Base Synthesis from Different Acid Hydrazide” in International Research Journal of Pharmacy, volume 4 issue 10, year 2013, pages 108-110.
  • Published a review article on “Various Pharmacological Aspects of Couamrin Derivatives: a Review in International Journal of Pharmaceutical Research and Bio-Science, volume 2, issue 6, year 2013, pages 168-194.
  • A review article is accepted in Research Journal of Chemical Sciences on “Diverse Pharmacological Aspects of Benzimidazole Derivatives: A Review” in volume 4, issue 3, year 2014.
  • Presented a Poster in Three Days “2nd International Conference on Herbal & Synthetic Drug Studies – 2014” on In-Vitro Study of Anti-microbial Studies of Novel 2,6-Ditertbutyl-1,4-Benzoquinone Hydrazones and their Molecular Docking Studies” at Abeda Inamdar Senior College of Arts, Commerce & Science, Camp, Pune on 10th to 12th Feb 2014.
  • Won 2nd prize at State Level “Dr. T. R. Ingle Poster Competition 2014” on Synthesis, Characterization, Antimicrobial Investigation Of Novel 3-Acetyl Coumarin Schiff Bases And Their Molecular Docking Studies”at S. P. College, Pune on 26th Feb 2014.
  • Won 2nd prize at State Level “Dr. T. R. Ingle Lecture Competition 2014” at S. P. College, Pune on 25th Feb 2014.
    • AVISHKAR-2014: Regi Verghese of M. Sc. II Organic Students participated in Avishkar (2015) organized by university of Pune and reached level two.


    • Ms. Sandhya Mardhekar and Mr. Arunodaya Chavan (M.Sc. II Organic Chemistry) presented poster entitled Thymoquinone from Nigella sativa – Inhibitor of inflammatory pathway and won Zonal Level Avishkar Research Competition-2014.
    • Miss Shrutika Randhir & Monica Parmanandan of M.Sc. II (Analytical Chemistry) bagged the 2nd prize at Dr. T. R. Ingale Intercollegiate Poster Competition held on 24th February 2011 at S.P. College, Pune. They were awarded certificates of merit & cash prize of Rs.2000/-.

To initiate and promote the interdisciplinary research, the Department of Chemistry has started Interdisciplinary Science and Research Academy (ISTRA) from October, 2010. Prof. Dr. Subhash Padhye (Ex. Head, Department of Chemistry, Pune University) is working as the Director of ISTRA. Ten interdisciplinary research projects have already been started along with Microbiology, Biotechnology, Pharmacy and Unani Medicines. The parent M. C. E. Society has generously provided Rs. 40 lacs as the seed money to ISTRA. The Department is now well equipped with instrumental facilities such as HPLC System, Electroanalysers (CV instrument), Rotavpours, Gas Chromatograph, RT-PCR, Electrophoresic Units, UV-Trans-illuminators etc. To extend the collaborative teaching and research work, the Department has signed a MoU with LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Missouri, USA. The teachers are encouraging post graduate students through M. Sc. Projects and preparing them for the future challenging competitive world.
i) Guest Seminars: ISTRA has been totally committed in arranging Guest seminars for its institutions and corresponding members. Accordingly, ISTRA has successfully conducted several guest lectures by eminent researchers from India and abroad. Notable seminars and speakers include:

  • Lecture by Dr. Mulla Ghazala from Z. V. M. Unani Medical College, Pune delivered the talk with respect to maintenance of health and immune system on 28th August 2014.
  • On 17th December 2014, Professor Avinash S. Kumbhar from Department of Chemistry, Savitribai Phule Pune University delivered an extensive talk on research opportunities and highlighted various emerging fields in composites and metal organic frameworks.


  • A Guest lecture by Dr. Safiya Lokhandwala from Z. V. M. Unani Medical College, Pune on the Topic “Anemia” was delivered on 22nd January 2015.
  • Lecture by Dr. N. P. Argade, Principal Senior Scientist, National Chemical Laboratory on 21st December 2013 “Remarkably Selective Nucleophilic Reactions of Cyclic Anhydrides and Derivatives: An Avenue for Synthesis of Bioactive Natural Products”.


  • Research Seminar by Dr. K. S. Rane, UGC-Emeritus Fellow, Rani Chennamma University (RCU), Belgaum on Synthesis and Characterization of Catalytic and Sensor Materials, on 20th November 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at P.G. Research Laboratory.
  • Research Seminar by Dr. Dharmalingam Subramaniam, Research Assistant Professor, University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, USA on Anti Cancer Activity of Tandutinib against Colo-Rectal Cancer, on  4th December 2013 at 2:30 p.m. at PAI Hall.


  • Lecture by Dr. N. P. Argade, Principal Senior Scientist, National Chemical Laboratory on 21st December 2013 “Remarkably Selective Nucleophilic Reactions of Cyclic Anhydrides and Derivatives: An Avenue for Synthesis of Bioactive Natural Products”.
  • Dr. Shrikant Anand delivered an elaborate talk on 13th December 2012 on Colon Cancer along with pathways and check points. He showed the therapeutic action of honokiol. He showed the results of in vitro and in vivo investigations related to collaborative projects.


  • Dr. Aamir Ahmed in his talks were very interesting and he explained the concept of cancer stem cells and epithelial to mesenchyma transition in pancreatic cancer cells for the benefit of students. He showed the actual photographs of tumors in MDA-MB-231 after in vivo validation. He described many classes of phytochemicals, which are currently being focused by various research groups all over the world. He cited few specific examples like isoflavones, indole, DIM, curcumin analogs and garcinol.
  • Dr. Animesh Dhar gave an extensive talk on statistics of pancreatic cancer, various pathways involved in pancreatic cancer and related molecular targets 10th January 2013. The topic of his lecture was entitled Can Cancer Stem Cells be Novel Targets for preventive and therapeutic approaches in pancreatic cancer?”


  • Dr. Bernhard entitled “ANTI CANCER DRUGS AND CLAY SCIENCES” on 2nd Feb. 2013 in the PAI High Tech Hall. He extensively discussed his research regarding novel phytochemical analogs which show potent anticancer activity. He also spoke about his novel cis-platin conjugates which are active against various cancer cells. He also discussed his work related to metallodrugs especially Gold and ruthenium complexes.
  • Dr. Dhiman Sarkar delivered an interesting research seminar for the ISTRA members on 12 January, 2013 in the PAI Hi Tech Hall. His lecture focused mainly on the development of novel assays for high throughput screening of novel drugs against MTb. He shared his research work based on designing of novel nitroimidazole derivatives against bacterial resistance.


  • ISTRA had organized Dr. Roy Jensen guest seminar on 5th March, 2013, at the PAI Tech Hall entitled “BRCA 1 is an HSP 90 Client Protein- implication for Clinical Medicine”. He mainly discussed his current research in the field of breast cancer research in relation to HSP protein and BRCA 1 gene. His group actively works on potent phytochemical namely Gedunin, which is abundant in Indian neem plant (Azadiracta indica).
  • Dr. Shrikant Anant (Associate Director of Cancer Prevention and Control. The University of Kansas Cancer Center, USA) delivered a very exciting talk on Cancer Stem Cells. He visited Azam Campus on 22nd December 2011.
  • On 15th December 2011, Professor T. Aminabhavi, CSIR Emiretus Scientist, SETs College of Pharmacy; Dharwad, talked about Biodegradable Polymers in Control Drug Delivery.


  • Dr. Syam Sen Gupta, Scientist, NCL delivered a very exciting talk entitled Chemistry – Our Life, Our Futureon 22nd October 2011 which is the theme of IYC-2011 as well.
  • Professor Hari Bhat as an expert speaker on 2nd November 2011. His lecture focused mainly on his research on “Antioxidant and anticancer potential of Resveratrol.”


  • A guest lecture was organized by the department of chemistry of Abeda Inamdar Senior college on the topic “Synthetic equivalents based on Weinreb’s amide and Julia Olefination” by Dr. Indrapal Singh Aidhen, form IIT Madras  on 27-01-2011 at 10:00 am at PAI conference hall.


  1. Dr. Khursheed Ahmed has visited University of Bayreuth, Germany under faculty exchange program as per MOU signed for 3 months.
  2. Ms. Khadija Syeda (ISTRA, Allana College of Pharmacy) has joined Wayne State University for her Doctoral programme in 2011. She has successfully completed her course work in the university and now is fully registered for Ph.D. work.
  3. Ms. Neha Patil (ISTRA, Dep. of Biotechnology) has been selected for MS degree at Lincoln University (Missourie, USA). She is expected to join her university in August 2012.
  4. Dr. Bernard Biersack (University of Bayreuth, Germany) has joined ISTRA in November 2012 for four months as a visiting faculty. The chemistry students were benefitted the most from his visit, as he is world expert Organic chemist. 
  5. A Memorandum of Agreement between Dr. Subhash Padhye (Director, ISTRA) and Dr. Zahra Afrasiabi from Lincoln University was signed on 09/22/2011. It was intended to facilitate and develop a genuine and mutually beneficial exchange/research relationship between the two institutions. The linkage hereby formed shall further promote each partner institution's objectives as well as strengthen the mutual relationship between the partners.
  6. Similar MOU was signed between University of Bayreuth, Germany and ISTRA regarding exchange of students and faculties for collaborative work. This agreement also allows students to obtain dual degrees from both universities for MS course in Drug Discovery.
  7. ISTRA has also signed an research MOU with Dr. T.M. Aminabhavi (K.L.E. College of Pharmacy, Hubli) which will benefit both institutions in terms of collaborative research work in the field of novel polymers in drug formulation.
  8. ISTRA has signed an MOU with Dr. Basu (Findlay University, USA), regarding exchange of research work in the field of pharmaceutical sciences and drug discovery.

Under the guidance of Professor Subhash Padhye (Director, ISTRA), several research projects have been initiated which resulted into many published manuscripts in peer-reviewed international journals. Capable students are selected by means of personal interview by Dr. Padhye from the concerned departments like Chemistry, Microbiology, Biotechnology and Pharmacy and the projects are distributed to the students. Responsible faculties take care regarding smooth functioning of the projects.
ISTRA is proud to announce that with the guidance and blessings of Mr. P.A. Inamdar (President, MCE Society), the Academy shall soon get its first Animal Tissue Culture Lab which will cater the needs of biologists for performing various assays and experiments useful in Drug Discovery. According the work for this new laboratory is underway in full swing. The tentative plan for the lab is attached. Accordingly, the furniture requirements, instruments required, apparatus required has been planned.
The Chemistry Department is a Recognized Research Center in the subject of Chemistry affiliated to University of Pune with four recognized guides in Chemistry. Presently six candidates are pursuing Ph. D. and four students have completed his Ph. D.


The Department conducts a programme aimed at improving of soft skills of the students in collaboration with Freelance Consultancy Services and Destiny Solutions and consultancies, Pune.
