Training

The department of Psychology, Abeda Inamdar Senior College, introduced an autonomous, value added course on “Introduction to psychopathology” with the aim of educating Psychology students and interested members of the community about the various Psychological disorders, their etiology and symptoms. The course aids those students who want to pursue their M.A. in Clinical and Counselling Psychology. It is also aimed at creating mental health awareness in the participants. To fulfill these needs, this course is being conducted from the A.Y. 2010-2011, every alternate year.

The department endeavours to instill professional skills in students through value added autonomous courses. Keeping in view the increasing importance of community mental health and increasing opportunities for trained professionals in the same, the Counselling Skills course was designed to impart, along with basic counselling skills, awareness of mental illness spectrum, skills to spread awareness in the lay public about the same and some alternate ways like arts based therapy to deal with the mental illnesses. This course fulfills the need for training in counseling skills and prepare our students to be able to give psychological first aid whenever necessary To that end the department has been conducting a course in ‘Counselling Skill’ every alternate year, under the guidance of Dr. Anjali Kedari since the year Academic Year 2011-2012.

Consultancy through counselling

Abeda Inamdar Senior college of Arts, Science and Commerce has a Counseling Cell to help students deal with their academic, career related, emotional, social and personal issues. The cell has been functional since the Academic Year 2008-2009 and is run by faculty of Psychology department with Dr. Anjali Kedari as its convener. Till date more than 200 students have been assisted with their issues. Record of first visit and follow up is meticulously maintained. Confidentiality is strictly observed.

The Counseling Cell focuses on early identification of stressors and extending Psychological First Aid. Awareness is created through many activities like observing mental health week, street plays and workshops about importance of psychological well-being and threats to the same.

The counseling cell has a three tiered structure. The first tier is made up of subject teachers and departments. Students may approach any teacher that they are comfortable with to receive guidance and help. The teachers help the students to resolve the issue and maintain a record of the interaction. This record is later submitted to Psychology department. If the teacher feels that more sustained help is needed, they refer the student to the Counseling Cell. The counselors in the cell make up the second tier. If the student is satisfied and issues are resolved at this stage, record is maintained and process is over. If however, more sustained help is needed, the third tier is accessed. The parents and Principal of college are taken into confidence and the student is referred to Psychologists and Psychiatrists practicing in hospitals or private set up. A list of competent Psychiatrists and Psychologists is maintained and concerned students can approach any one of these according to their choice and convenience. The entire proceedings of Counseling Cell, at college level, are free of cost.
