The Department of Botany was established in June, 1991. The department has highly qualified staff, 2 spacious laboratories, a herbarium and a plant tissue culture facility. Presently, Botany is offered as a general subject at the F.Y.BSc and S.Y.BSc level. The department plans to introduce a specialization in Botany for T.Y.BSc. As the syllabus focuses on Horticulture and Agriculture, study tours and visits to the Hi-Tech Floriculture, Mushroom production unit, Biocontrol labs, Biofertilizer unit and Biotechnology units at the College of Agriculture, Pune. The aim is to balance a student’s theoretical knowledge with the practical aspects. The department conducts skill development workshops to equip the girl students on “Fruit and Vegetable Preservation” in association with the Food and Nutrition unit, Ministry of Women and Child development, Government of India. The department also conducts short term courses on Plant Tissue Culture techniques. Students are encouraged to participate in various intercollegiate competitions i.e. Flower arrangement, Projects, Oral Presentation etc. The staff members are actively involved in interdisciplinary research, participate in workshops on syllabus framing and present research papers at National and International conferences. Department of Botany conducted two day state level conference on Conservation of Biodiversity in Association with BCUD Savitribai Phule Pune University. Conference held successfully with 13 excellent resource persons, 42 teachers participates from Pune University, 16 from Mumbai, Kolhapur and Bharati Vidhyapeeth Universities and 62 students participants. Total participants were 120. OBJECTIVES OF THE CONFERENCE: Conservation of biodiversity is the need of our as there is rapid exploration of biodiversity for new medicines, foods, crops, pesticides and other commercially valuable genetic and biological products and processes. Developmental projects like urbanization, industrialization, mining, construction of Dams, highways, infrastructure development are a threat to biodiversity. • To create awareness about the potential benefits and perceived risks of biotechnology intervention in sustainable development and utilization of natural resources, human, animal and plant health, and environmental protection. • Developing strategic approaches to policy development, implementation and integration, including improving environmental governance and raising awareness. • Protecting, preserving, managing, restoring and facilitating and functioning of natural systems, natural habitats, wild flora and fauna with the aim of halting desertification and the loss of biodiversity.
